Patients are fast tracked to this service by Mr Evans if needed, following assessment in the muscle clinic.  Surgery is usually undertaken at the North Staffordshire Hospital with transfer to RJAH for post-operative care once stable.
 
Cardiac Muscular Dystrophy Clinic

Every three months by Dr Quinlivan and Dr Wilmshurst, Consultant Cardiologist.
The clinic is held at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.  All patients attending this clinic will have a cardiac ECHO.
Sleep studies and 24 hour ECGs can also be arranged through the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for patients attending the muscle clinic.
 
McArdles's Disease Clinic
 
Held 4 monthly at RJAH.  This is a clinic specifically for patients with metabolic myopathies.  It is usually attended by Mrs Ann Phillips, President of the Glycogen Storage Disease Association (AGSD) to whom we are grateful for support.
Collaborative research is being undertaken with Dr Greg Whyte and Mr Richard Godfrey, Sports Scientists with the British Olympic Association and Mr John Buckley, research physiotherapist and exercise physiologist, University of Keele.
This work is looking into new ways of evaluating  the severity of McArdle's disease and also improved criteria for exercise prescription.

Respiratory Management
 
Close links exist with Dr Martin Samuels Consultant Paediatrician and Dr Martin Allen, Respiratory Physician at the North Staffordshire Hospital.
Non-invasive respiratory support is offered when required.
The muscle clinic has just obtained funding for it's own Breas ventilator. so that our patients can be started on treatment without delay pending funding form the PCTs.

Orthotics
 
The muscle clinic has close links with the ORLAU, the gait laboratory at RJAH.  Novel splints are being evaluated for their effectiveness in foot drop and muscular dystrophy.  In particular we are looking at the use of more flexible materials such as lycra.  Mrs Sybil Farmer, research physiotherapist and Mr Gary Gordon, orthotist are the lead investigators.
 
Genetic testing and molecular diagnosis
 
Professor Sewry and Dr Quinlivan are collaborating with groups in France, Germany and Australia to identify new moecular techniques and DNA testing in the congenital myopathies (especially central core myopathy, mini-core myopathy and rigid-spine syndrome).
Professor Sewry is collaborating with a group in Germany to seek non-invasive means to assess for Malignant Hyperthermia in Central Core Myopathy.
